Lewis once said that he was more 'hungry' for the title and Nico went to great lenghts and proved Lewis to be wrong. In the end I believe that Nico proved that he was 'hungry' enough for the title and got it. But, of course, if you manage to scrape off something in multiple places the total will be significant. I read somewhere that this spared a couple of grams (!). ![]() To add some more :-), Nico even had less paint on his helmet to keep the total weight down. 2016 me shudders at the thought of admitting thatĪgree that _alpa_chino_'s comment sums it up nicely. Whatever way you look at it, he delivered year after year against an all time great at the peak of his career (or approaching it) and finally achieved the championship he craved, and I think that deserves respect. Yes Lewis had worse reliability but if he hadn’t been so far behind after the first few races that might not have been such a factor in the championship, and to be honest I think he got a bit complacent after Austin 2015. Whilst at the time I considered him lucky to win in 2016, the real work started with his incredible run of wins from the end of 2015 well into the next season which put Lewis on the back foot. ![]() He was consistent, a very good qualifier and must have had incredible mental strength to put together the season he did in 2016 after being so soundly beaten in 2015. r/formula1, now with extra midfield coverage! 2023 Driver Standings #ĭespite not being a fan during his time partnering Lewis (due to his at times dubious tactics and tetchy personality mainly) I can admit in hindsight that he was a better driver than I gave him credit for.
